<요로원야화기(要路院夜話記)>에 나타난 偏見의 양상과 解消의 의미

<요로원야화기>는 한국서사문학사에서 드물게 보는 특이한 작품이다. 그것은 ‘여행자 문학’이고, ‘일인칭 서술자 문학’이며, ‘대화체 문학’이다. 이 작품은 여행 중에 있는 서울양반과 시골양반, 두 나그네가 주막에서 만나 하룻밤 동안에 주고받은 이야기를 기록한 것으로, 짤막한 분량 속에 많은 내용을 담고 있다. 두 사람의 우연한 만남. 身元 확인 과정에서의 일화, 作詩를 통한 재주 겨루기, 당대 사회의 모순과 부조리에 대한 토론과 비판 등이 차례로 서술된다. 조선 숙종 때의 文人 朴斗世의 작품으로 알려진 이 작품에는 국문본 한 편과 20여 편의 한문본이 전해지고 있지만 이본 간의 내용적 차이는 그리 크지 않은 편이다. 지금까지 이 작품은 ‘시골양반이 무식함을 가장해 서울양반을 속이고 골탕먹이는 이야기’로 이해되어 왔다. 이 글에서는 기존 해석을 수용하면서 그와는 다른 시각으로 작품을 바라보고자 한다. <요로원야화기>의 중심 내용은 두 사람의 만남과 사귐에 있다. 출신과 성장배경이 다른 두 주인공이 여행 중에 만나지만, 상대방에 대한 편견 때문에 서로 쉽게 친해지지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 대화를 진행해 나가는 중에 서로의 편견을 극복하고 마침내 의기투합하여 마음속 깊은 대화를 나누게 된다. 이렇게 볼 때 이 작품은 인간의 만남에 있어 편견이 어떤 모습으로 존재하며 그것이 어떤 영향을 끼치는지를 보여주는 작품으로 이해할 수 있다.

Yorowonyahwaki is a significant Korean narrative, in terms of its theme and writing style. This work consists of dialogues between two travelers narrated by a first-person point of view. One of the main characters is a gentleman from Seoul, the capital city of Choson, and the other gentleman comes from a rural area. The two gentlemen meet by chance in a village inn and make conversation about themselves and social events. Even though the length of the work is relatively short, the dialogues of two strangers reflect the contemporary social circumstances by describing episodes on their social positions, their criticism on social injustices, and the competition of writing poems. Hitherto Yorowonyahwaki is considered as a simple story about a gentleman from Seoul who disguises himselfas a fool and deceives the other gentleman from a rural area. This work, however, can be approached from different perspectives. By describing the meeting of two travelers, it deals with the issue of prejudice in human relations. At the beginning of their meeting, they cannot understand each other and feel uncomfortable because of their prejudices against each other. While making conversation, however, they realize the sincere character of each other and establish a strong sense of bond over their prejudices. This work, therefore, can be understood as the story of the existence of prejudices in a human society and overcoming it by depicting the meeting of two strangers.
