<보은기우록(報恩奇遇錄)>에 나타난 여성의식

이 글은 <보우기우록>의 여성인물들이 혼인과 관련하여 보여주는 행동을 통해 이 작품에 나타난 여성의식과 그 의미를 살펴본 것이다. <보은기우록>의 남성주인공인 위연청과 관련한 백승설·장미주·설소아는 가부장제이데올로기 안에서 살아가고 있는 인물들이지만 이에 순응하고 있기보다는 다양한 층위의 미끄러짐을 통해 그 안에서 균열을 일으키고 있다. 백승설은 유교적 세계관에 충실하며 예법에 따르면서도 자신에게 주어진 삶을 수동적으로 받아들이고만 있는 것이 아니라 상황에 따라서 예법(禮法)에 대한 시비(是非)를 판단해 적극적이자 능동적으로 다른 인물을 가르치면서 자신의 삶을 개척해 나가는 인물이다. 장미주와 설소아는 공적 영역으로의 여성의 진출이 막힌 상황에서 혼인을 통해서 남은 여생이 결정되는 것을 인식하고 배우자를 찾는 일에 적극적으로 나서는 인물들이다. 이들은 자신들의 욕망을 위연청을 통해서는 이루어내지 못한다. 그러나 <보은기우록>의 작가는 유교적 세계관에 따르면 분명 비례(非禮)를 저지른 이들을 단죄하고 있는 것이 아니라 장미주는 다른 인물과 혼인을 하는, 설소아는 독신으로 살아가는 후일담을 마련하여 이들이 혼인을 넘어서서 자신의 삶을 주체적으로 살아갈 수 있도록 해주고 있다. <보은기우록>이 백승설과 장미주, 설소아라는 가부장제이데올로기 안에서 균열을 일으키고 있는 여성인물들의 모습을 보여주고 목소리를 들려주고 있는 것은 당대 가부장제 이데올로기 사회 안에서 그 질곡의 해소를 꿈꾸었던 소설 향유층의 꿈과 끊임없는 여러 층의 미끄러짐을 통해 다층적인 균열을 내고자 했던 작가의 의도가 만나 직조된 것으로 여겨진다.

The primary objective of this study is to present women's consciousness shown in <Boeungiurok(報恩奇遇錄)> through analyzing female characters' attitude toward marriage. There are three female characters - Paek Seung-sul, Jang Mi-ju, Sul So-a - along with the male character Wi Yeon-cheong. They all live in a belief system called Patriarchal Ideology, that justifies male domination over women. The female characters in this book, however, are somewhat rebellious on the common belief. Paek Seung-sul behaves herself in Confucian doctrine while she defines right and wrong of her own accord in certain situations. She tries to make her life better and becomes an active role model for other women. Jang Mi-ju and Sul So-a admit that women should stay at home, and they are eager to find their husband-to-be. They are fully aware of the fact that a good marriage can provide them a more satisfying, comfortable life. They both recognize that Wi Yeon-cheong would not make a good husband as they wanted. Some time later, Jang Mi-ju are married to another man than Wi Yeon-cheong, and Sul So-a are living by herself. The author does not punish the female characters for not being obedient for Confucian doctrine. Rather, he let them live their own lives whether they are maried or not. The female characters in <Boeungiurok(報恩奇遇錄)> may express the desires of readers who wanted to escape from patriarchal ideology and sexuality in their society. The author may have read their minds and decided to write about it. The intention of author may be to provide catharsis for his readers living with the guilt of their sins of disobedience to patriarchal ideology and Confucian doctrine.
