근대전환기 불교잡지의 여성담론

이 글은 근대전환기의 불교잡지에 나타난 여성담론의 양상과 배경, 그리고 의의를 검토한 것이다. 1910년대는 불교 부흥 내지 근대화 운동과 관련하여 불타의 평등주의적 여성관이 대두했다는 점이 특징적이다. 구체적인 내용은 수행과 불사에서 남녀평등을 강조하며 여성 불자들의 역할을 근대적으로 재편하는 것이다. 1920년대는 불교잡지에 여성담론이 급증하고 그 양상도 다양해졌다는 특징이 있다. 우선 종래 '자모'의 역할이 '조선의 어머니'로 좀 더 구체화되었다. 또한 이 시기에 들어 주체적이고 적극적으로 행동하는 불교 신여성의 형상이 대두한다. 한편 이 시기의 여성담론은 전근대적인 여성 불자의 수행 방식을 중요하게 다루고, 정렬 등 전통적인 여성의 미덕을 불교 신여성과 긴밀히 관련시키기도 하는데 이는 여성담론이 여전히 전근대적인 신앙 내지 생활 방식에 익숙해 있는, 세간의 사정을 반영한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 무엇보다 유혹자로서의 여성에 대한 담론이 많이 등장하는데 이는 불교잡지가 당시 여성의 몸, 연애에 주목하는, 사회문화적인 풍조의 영향을 받은 데 기인한 것이면서 대중화를 위한 불교잡지의 편집 의도와 무관하지 않은 것으로 보인다. 이상과 같은 근대전환기 불교 잡지의 여성담론은 많은 한계에도 불구하고 불타의 평등주의적 여성관이 복원되고, 잡지라는 매체의 특성에 의해 일반 여성 독자의 주의를 환기하는 역할을 했다는 의의가 있다. 무엇보다 불타의 평등주의적 여성관에 기초한 불교잡지의 여성담론은 현재의 여성문제를 해결하는 데도 시사하는 바가 많을 것이라 본다.

I studied the aspects, background, and import of the discourse of woman in Buddhist magazine at the transition periods to modern times. It is characteristic of the discourse of woman in the 1910's that the egalitarian ideas of Buddha had application to women's affairs, appeared as the ideological slogan of Buddhism revivalism and modernism and the viewpoint of woman based on egalitarian principles came to the fore. In the concrete, it is comprised of the contents that stress sexual equality and reorganize the role of woman Buddhists modernly. It is characteristic of the discourse of woman in the 1920's that the discourse of woman in Buddhist magazine increased rapidly and the aspects of it varied. First, the earlier role of woman, 'gracious mother' took shape to 'mother of Joseon(朝鮮)'. And the image, the modern woman of Buddhism, behaving actively and positively made appearance at this times. Lastly, the discourse of woman as tempting woman had appear in it. This originate in that Buddhist magazine was affected from social and cultural trend at that time, paying attention to the body of woman and love, and is connected with the editing of it, for popularization. In these points, the discourse of woman in Buddhist magazine at the transition periods to modern times acquires the significance that the viewpoint of woman based on egalitarian principles was reconstructed, and called woman readers attention by the characteristics of magazine medium. Before everything, the discourse of woman in Buddhist magazine, based on the egalitarian viewpoint of woman of Buddha is useful in the solution of women's affairs at the present day.
