Research on Political Awareness and Voting Behavior of Male and Female Voter in the 19th General Election -Focused on the 4 Electoral Districts with Female Candidates

1. 연구의 목적 및 내용 가. 연구의 필요성과 목적 □ 본 연구는 2012년 총선 과정에서 나타난 유권자 의식을 통해 남녀 유권자의 정치의식, 남녀 지역구 후보자에 대한 인식, 여성 대표성 실현에 대한 인식을 파악함. 제19대 총선에서 여성후보가 출마한 지역을 중심으로 선거 후 조사를 실시함으로써 정치의식 및 투표행태를 파악하고 여성대표성 제고를 위해 이에 대응 방안을 논의함. 나. 연구 내용 및 방법 □ 연구 내용 - 2012년 4월에 치러진 제19대 총선에서 여성 대표성을 이루는 지역구, 비례대표제의 후보자, 당선자의 성비를 분석하고, 유권자의 성비를 분석함. - 제19대 총선에 투표한 일반인 1,000명을 대상으로 2012년 6월 18일부터 29일까지 약 12일에 걸쳐 진행한 조사 결과를 분석함. - 일반적인 정치의식과 투표행태뿐만 아니라, 지역 여성후보자에 대한 인식과 투표 그리고 여성 대표성 증가에 대한 의견 등을 살펴봄. - 분석 결과를 바탕으로 남녀 유권자의 정치의식 및 투표행태와 연관한 여성대표성 제고 방안을 논함.

This research was conducted to identify the general political awareness and voting behavior of male and female voters in the 19th General Election held in Apr 2012. The telephone survey was carried out from Jun 18th to 29th 2012 on 250 voters in each of the 4 electoral districts with female candidates, for a total of 1,000 voters. The results of the survey showed that about 70.3% of the respondents have positive view about the female candidate and answered that the reason is because they believe 'the female candidate is expected to do a better job in governing the district'. The respondents who answered that they have negative opinions about the female candidate cited 'the lack of expertise' as the major reason for their answers. Approximately 57.4% of the respondents said that women should be better represented in the politics, highlighting the significance of raising women's representation in the national political arena. It is high time that we should look into the current status of women's representation in politics and seek measures to improve their representation in the future political arena.
