This study aims to examine the mystery of time that appears in Ashes to Ashes by Harold Pinter, thinking about it in relation to the changes in his political awareness. The characteristics of time in this work are unrealistic and also different from those of previous plays. Here, Rebecca depicts her memories that happened in the days under the Nazi regime, when she wasn't even born. This form of memory beyond intelligibility shows different perspective on time from his early and middle plays. In this work, it is peculiar that the past and its memory are not confined to individuals', so cannot be interpreted as subjective one. I suggest here that the change of the view on time is closely related to that of Pinter's sensibility for the other in a Levinasian sense. Stating that time is the relationship with infinity and the encounter with otherness, Levinas says that time always adds something new to being―the future. Therefore, Rebecca's "impossible memory" can be understood to reveal the dimension that we are always exposed to the other, and it goes beyond the egocentric present of a life.
