A quantitative analysis of English clipped compounds

This paper will examine the morphological and phonological structure of clipped compounds in English. Starting from Lappe(2007), this paper has proposed a quantitative analysis of English clipped compounds. English clipped compounds are shown to anchor to the initial part of each unclipped constituent, which can be defined in terms of prosodic unit, that is, prosodic word. This size restriction follows exactly the pattern exhibited by the majority of English monomorphemic nouns. Regarding stress placement, main stress falls on the first syllable irrespectively of the stress pattern of the unclipped source, which comes from the trochee stress pattern of the vast majority of English nouns. In these regards, clipped compounds can be seen as congruous with the unmarked pattern in English nouns.
