Development of CAT smart app for elementary English reading diagnostic test

The purpose of this study is to develop a Computer Adaptive Testing(CAT) smart app for extensive Elementary English reading diagnostic testing, which will give students their reading ability index before they start reading. The CAT smart app for Elementary English reading diagnostic testing consists of four parts: the presentation of login procedure, the presentation of four topics, the presentation of the reading ability index evaluation questions and the presentation of the reading ability index and story book. The test utilizes smart devices and CAT. Based on 700 reading ability index evaluation questions, the CAT smart app has been developed to determine a student's reading ability index. The core engine used in the CAT smart app was developed using PHP, Java SDK and Android SDK. After the analysis of a survey conducted on students and an expert group, the need for the modification of CAT smart app was recognized. The questions in the CAT system were modified as well. After the development of the CAT smart app, a correlation analysis was conducted between the students' evaluated reading ability index and their English reading ability performance assessments. It was found that there was a high correlation.
