The present study aims to compare the regional differences in beliefs in English learning, learning strategies, and achievement. 96 students of 6th grade elementary school from three different regions were chosen; 27 from an island, 28 from a medium-sized city and 41 from a metropolitan city. The participants' beliefs in English learning and learning strategies were measured using modified SILL and BALLI respectively. The results are as follows: there were statistically significant differences in English achievement, beliefs in English learning and the use of English learning strategies between the three regional groups. However, within group analysis found that the differences in English achievement were not correlated with beliefs in English learning and the use of English learning strategies, indicating that the disparities were originated from the regional factor. Statistical analysis also found that the use of learning strategies was positively correlated with beliefs in English learning. These findings suggest that further research be required to identify the factors affecting regional disparities and that improvement efforts need to be pursued to mitigate these disparities.
