In this study, to develop more effective intensive English training programs for promoting the expertise required in the global era, a questionnaire survey of the teachers' needs for programs with an interview was carried out targeting primary English teachers. The results of the survey and interview are as follows. Firstly, in the case of domestic programs, the respondents preferred general English language skills to classroom English and the technical managing of English in class. This means that most teachers still expect to improve their English abilities, especially, their communicative competence through the programs. Secondly, they wanted to learn more practical teaching methodology rather than theoretical concepts. Subjects like 'collaborative development of lesson plans and activities', 'workshop for teaching activities', 'micro-teaching and lesson analysis' and 'co-teaching with native English teachers' were preferred, because they could be applied to real English teaching at school. Finally, in the case of overseas training programs, as with domestic ones, more practical lectures and practicum-style courses were still preferred to theory-based lectures. Furthermore, they wanted to have a chance to experience the local culture and have a mentoring service from the local teachers. Based on the results of this study, if teachers' needs are reflected in the development of intensive programs, more effective programs can be provided for the teachers.
