The purpose of this study is to investigate the taoxueshi of Yulgok. Yulgok(1536-1584) is a neo-confucianist and poet in Chosun Dynasty. He was an eminent neo-confucianist, for he established an original neo-confucian theory, Litongqiju (理通氣局). The characteristics of Yulgok as a neo-confucianist can be found in his poetry. He wrote poems under the neo-confucian literary theory, and in his poems we can see his neo-confucian thought. So I name these poems as taoxueshi and intend to investigate the characteristics of Yulgok's taoxueshi. Before the investigating the Yulgok's taoxueshi, to examine his theory of Liqi(理氣), the fundamental principle in his neo-confucian thought is essential. Yulgok's theory of Liqi can be summarize as follows. The nature including human consists of Li and Qi. Li is the organizing pattern of the Qi or pneuma. The changing of the nature is carried by Qi. Li has no forrn and no erergy, so Li quates through Qi which has form and energy. In other words, Li incarnates itself in Qi. Li and Qi are two things, but they are one thing in the empirical world. They can't separate each other. Li is the uiversal being while Qi is the particular being having form which constricts itself in space and time. In the body, I attended to the relation between Yulgok's poetry and his neo-confucian thought. I categorized the taoxueshi into three bodies in terms of neo-confucian system. They are cosmology, mentalogy, and disciplire. Analyzing the taoxueshi, I could find Yulgok' original theory of Liqi, the fundamental principle in his neo-confucian penerated in his taoxueshi Yulgok's taoxueshi manifests neo-confucious literary theory, wenyizaitaolun(文以載道論) which is indicating the idea that literature should carry the Tao(道), cosmological and humanistic priciple. Yulgok's taoxueshi reflects the above literary theory in terms of his neo-confucian thought.
