'Myung-hwang Gyegam Eonhae(明皇誡鑑諺解)' was Mitten by Kim. Han-shin(金漢蓋) at the King Young-jo era in 18th century. This work is the anecdotage describing the love-affair between Chinese King Xuan-zoog and Yang Kuei-fei during a period of the Tang age of China. The my dealt in this work is well-known in Asian countries as well as in China through various forms such as historical Miting, literature, and legendary. These sources were introduced into our countries earlier than Koryo era, and were rewritten as literaure. Kaewon Cheonbo Youngsasi(開元天寶詠史詩) written by Lee Kyubo(李奎報) was ore of them Later, th: Great King Se-jong of Chosun dynasty let his young scholars rewrite the story and make the new version, Myung-hwang Gyegam(明皇誡鑑). And this work was Mitten based m Lee, Kyubo's work. Myung-hwang Gyegam was Mitten in Chinese letters, and it was fer the purpose of disciplining the crown Princes and the government officers. So it can be said to be made basically fer warning male politicians m to live a dissipated life. King Se-jo, the son of King Se-joog, ordered to translate this work into Korean and let children and female adults read it. But these two works were disappeared and we can't find any now. The version. we see row is what Kim, Han-shin rewrote based m the old version which had been inherited through the families of the son-in-law of King Se-jo. It is not sure if this is the translated script of King Se-jo or not. However, it is thought to be the one deeply related to that old version, judging by the fact the titles of the two works are identical. This work is consisted of two parts. The first part is about the my that Chinese King Xuan-zoog arxl Yang, Kuei-fei met and loved, living happy but dissipated lives together, and then the situation of the country got worse and King Xuan-zong killed Yang, Kuei-fei while they were fleeing from the enemy. The second one describes Xuan-zong's story that he missed Yang, Kuei-fei and charished the memory of her with various ceremonies and events after her death. As being written based upon both Myung Hwang Gyegam(明皇誡鑑) and its translated version of King Se-jo era, this work cannot be said as a novel, but it is possible to say that it has touch of novel because it's Korean-written 'story book'. As I mentioned before, this work was written for the purpose of disciplining the king and the officers, but later it had changed its complexion into more funny stories. Thus, Myung Hwang Gyegam Eonhae got to hold its position as one of our story literature, affecting many other novels one way or aocther. We can see partly but importantly similar aspects in Shim Cheong Jeon, which describing the scene that Sim-cheoog and a king get to know each other, many, and live a happy life together. And this kind of scene is often found in other Korean classic narratives. Yang Gyuibi which belongs to Shin Scseol(the new and modem novels) introduced at the end of the Chosun dynasty, contains the similar story to Myung Hwang Gyegam Eonhae's. And we are witnessing some works dealing with Yang, Kuei-fei's life among the modem Korean novels. According to these facts, Myung Hwang Gyegam Eonhae is thought to be a significant work in our history of narrative literature, and its influence on the Korean narrative literature might have been great.
