황경원의 <명배신전> 연구

A Study on Hwang Gyeongwon's <Myeong Baesin Jeon>

황경원(1709∼1787)은 18세기의 대표적 관각문인으로 젊어서부터 古文에 힘써 명성을 얻었다. 그의 대표작으로서 청에 대해 배척적인 태도를 노골적으로 드러내고 있는 <명배신전>은 명을 높이고 청에 대한 복수심을 고취시키려는 의도를 담고 있다. 그러한 의도는 각권의 서문에서 충분히 설파되고 있다. 서문은 경전의 인용이 많고 의론적인 성격이 짙어서 상당히 典雅한 문체를 이루고 있다. 전반적으로 이념에 충실한 인물을 담고 있고 각 인물 중심의 서술을 하고 있으므로 인물을 형상화하기 위해서는 일화뿐 아니라 야담에서 취한 내용도 사실적 수법으로 기록하게 된다. 전의 본문 서술에서는 간결체로 호흡이 빠른 문장을 쓰기 때문에 상당히 사건 전개가 빠르고, 대화체 등 상황을 잘 보여줄 수 있는 방법을 사용한다. 아울러 세부적인 묘사와 함께 소설적 문체도 사용하여 인물들의 행동이 매우 구체적으로 묘사되어 있고 다양한 인물들이 종횡무진 그려져 있다. 전체적으로 북벌의식에 사로잡혀 있는 강개지사형 인물들이 등장하고 있어서 그 인물의 특성을 묘사하는 가운데 비분강개한 어조가 격앙되어 나타난다. 내용이 또한 事大의 명분에 관한 것이므로 그런 명분에 대해 명시하고 있는 유교경전의 인용이 빈번할 수밖에 없다. <명배신전>은 청을 인정할 수 없고 그 아래 복속국이 된 조선의 현실을 더욱 인정할 수 없는 조선후기 상황에서 나온 영웅담인 것이다.

Hwang Gyeongwon(1709∼1787 黃景源) is a representative literary man on 18 century. He became famous making efforts to study ancient writing since young. <Myeong Baesin Jeon 明陪臣傳> which is his best work raises honor to Myeong(明) and inspires revengeful thought to Cheong(淸). Such intention is elucidated in the preface. Preface is full of quotation of Confucian Books, it is concerned with argument about justice. On the whole, to describe many faithful men Hwang deals with episode and unofficial historical story. on narrative paragraph, his literary style is very concise. He described the character vividly, and development of affairs is very fast and it is expressed in detail. He inquired into classics, but he used novelistic style in <Myeong Baesin Jeon>. <Myeong Baesin Jeon> is a story of heros come out of situation on 18 century that the actual condition was placed under Cheong's control, but they denied Cheong as a ruler.
