18세기 고전 소설의 역사 수용 일양상

A study on The Types of Acceptance of History in The Korean Classical Novel in 18th Century -focused on The 『Okhwankibong(玉環奇逢)』-

＜옥환기봉＞은 광무제의 한나라 부흥과정과 음후, 곽후와의 결연을 그린 작품이다. 광무제의 한실 부흥 과정은『後漢書』와 ＜동한연의＞를 공히 참고하여 이루어진 것이다. 인물과 사건 등에 대한 정보를 중심으로 할 때는『後漢書』의 기록을 주로 이용하였고, 전쟁담이나 고난 등 극적이고 흥미로운 부분을 서술할 때는 ＜동한연의＞를 참고하였다. 반면, 광무제ㆍ곽후ㆍ음후의 관계는 작가가 역사 기록을 바탕으로 변개하거나 확장하고 있다. 작가는 곽후가 폐출되고 음후가 그 뒤를 이은 역사적 사실에 대하여 이유를 설명하고자 하고 있다. 이 내용은 작가의 상상력이 극대화되면서 역사 기록의 빈 부분을 채운 것이다. 그리고는 '음후의 등극이 세간의 평처럼 姿色에 의한 것이 아니라 삼생 인연과 음후의 덕성 때문이라는 작가 자신의 의도를 펼쳐 보이고 있다. ＜옥환기봉＞은 본격적인 중국 역사의 수용을 찾아 볼 수 있는 작품이면서 동시에 그 속에 우리 식의 처첩 갈등을 살려 낸 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 이는 우리의 소설사에서 17세기 말부터 이어 온 중국 역사 수용이 우리의 소설 전통과 만나면서 획득할 수 있는 나름의 성과를 보여 준 것이라고 할 수 있다. 더구나, ＜옥환기봉＞은『後漢書』라고 하는 正史의 기록을 바탕으로 하면서도, 그 시기를 다루고 있는 중국의 연의소설은 함께 활용하였다는 사실에서도 특징적이다.

『Okhwankibong』is a work which describes the renaissance of Han Empire under the Kwangmuje(光武帝 : Emperor Kwangmu)'s rule and the Emperor's relationship with Umhu(Queen Um) and Kwakhu(Queen Kwak). The renaissance of Han Empire under the Kwangmuje's rule was described with reference to both 『Huhanseo(後漢書)』and 『Donghan-yeonui(東漢演義)』. This work generally referred to the record of『Huhanseo』when it was centering on the informations about characters and incidents, and it also referred to the record of『Donghanyeonui』when it was describing some dramatic and interesting parts such as accounts of war or suffering. On the other hand, the relationship among Kwangmuje, Kwakhu, and Umhu was changing or expanding on the basis of a historical record. The writer is trying to explain the reason for the historical fact why Kwakhu was dethroned and Umhu succeeded to the throne after her. This content filled in a blank of the historical record with the writer's extreme imagination. The writer was also trying to assert himself that Umhu's enthronement did not resulted from her beauty as generally known but from her virtue. From『Okhwankibong』, we cannot only find the positive acceptance of Chinese history but also the peculiar conflict between wife and concubine in our traditional society. This showed us a unique result of the fusion between acceptance of Chinese history which continued since the end of 17th century and our own tradition of novel. Furthermore,『Okhwankibong』is also unique in the fact that not only was it based on『Huhanseo』, the authentic historical record, but on another chinese popular historical novel whose content was dealing with the same age to『Okhwankibong』.
