On the lives of noble class women in the 17th century of Chosun dynasty

This essay is a report about the lives of noble class women in the 17th century of Chosun dynasty. To get close to the lives of noble class women in the 17th century, the perosnal collections of works at ＜Han-guk-mun-jip-choung-gan(韓國文集總刊)＞ were examined. The number of the writers lived in the 17th century was 65 persons, the articles reach 386 pieces. And most articles about women were written after their death to praise their virtues. This essay could make an offer menaingful data to understand the old novels of the 17th century of Chosun dynasty. It is because that the ternimology ′Gyu-bnag-susul(閨房小說)′, and the works named ′So-hyun-seong(蘇賢聖錄)′were closely related to the 17th century. For concrete understanding the terminology ′Gyu-bnag-susul(閨房小說)′, the works as ′Sa-ssi-nam-jeong-gi(謝氏南征記)′ and ′So-hyun-seong(蘇賢聖錄)′ or understanding the enforcement of the Confucian patriarchy, the study of lives of nobel class women in the 17th century needs to be preceded. This essay was started by this kind of critical mind. As a result, I could find some characteristics, ′Gyu-bang(閨房) of the 17th century′ were not a close space at all. Married women still kept strong relations with the parent′s home and visited each other. And the women had to carry out several roles. Among those roles, there were some tasks to manage economic problems and keep daily lives. These facts are expected to become a criteria to understand the old novels in the 17th century of Chosun dynasty. To get a better date, comparisons the articles of the 17th century with those of the 18th and 19th centuries will be followed.
