Action Research: Literature-Based Instruction through Stylistic Analysis in a Korean university English classroom

The purpose of this study was to explore the process of implementing stylistic approach using young adult literature based on the framework of action research in a university English classroom. To attain the objective, the following research question was proposed: How can learners develop their language awareness through stylistic approach? To find the answers to the research question, data were collected from diverse sources such as teacher's field notes and learner's reflection journals. Data collected were analyzed in a qualitative manner. In the study, the learners were able to improve their language awareness through three transitional stages. The data analysis yielded the following results: The first finding is that the stylistic analysis of the literary text provided opportunities for language learners to explore the deviant use of languages and raised their language awareness in relation to the subtleties of style, or language choice and acquired refining knowledge of language. The second finding is that the learners were empowered to critically engage with the text after stylistic approach.
