핀란드의 영어교육환경의 현황 및 시사점

The Current Situation and Suggestions of the Environment for English Education in Finland

핀란드는 전국민의 75%가 영어를 자유자재로 구사할 수 있다. 이러한 능력은 정규교육으로 이루어낸 결과이다. 본 연구는 핀란드 영어교육제도를 고찰을 통해 우리나라 영어교육 발전에 시사점을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 연구의 결과 첫째, 영어수업이 의사소통 중심으로 초기부터 영어의 읽기, 쓰기, 말하기, 듣기 네 기능을 균형 있게 다루고 있다. 둘째, 내용-언어 통합교육방법의 도입으로 사회, 과학, 국어 등 다수의 과목에서 공통된 주제를 골라 영어로 가르치고 있다. 셋째, 핀란드에서는 영어를 쉽게 접할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 모든 사람들이 매체어를 통하지 않고 영어에 노출되도록 하고 있다. 넷째, 의사소통 중심의 영어교육에 대한 평가 방식이 과정중심, 서술식으로 이루어지고 있다. 다섯째, 핀란드에서 수준 높은 영어교육의 전제조건의 하나로서 양질의 교사 양성을 들 수 있다.

Seventy five percent(75%) of total population in Finland can speak English. This is a result from regular education. The purpose of this study is to explore the English education system in Finland and provide some suggestions for developing Korean English education. Main results of the study are as the followings. First, English class in Finland deals with four ability of English(reading, writing, speaking, and listening) early focusing on communication. Second, common themes in many subjects such as social studies, science, and language are taught by English using content- language integration educational method. Third, in Finland, everyone is exposed in English without mediated language making environment in which everyone can easily contact with English. Fourth, the evaluation method on communication-centered English education is doing focusing on process and essay. Finally, one of the preconditions for high level of English education in Finland is the cultivation of high qualified teacher.
