This article examines the useful ways to teach English to younger children using English storybooks and picture books. Asking the question, 'why storytelling?', I explore the essential purpose of reading as well as the educational methods of teaching English. The reason why I emphasize the role of reading more than the effective ways of teaching English is that English storybooks and picture books are not textbooks for teaching English, but works of art. The authors and illustrators write and draw the books for letting the readers read and think of the themes with various points of view. By reading, thinking, and enjoying, the readers can widen their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the world. However, in Korea, lots of teachers, instructors, and parents seem to think that storybooks and picture books written in English are useful and effective tools to teach English for their students and children. They aren't likely to consider the crucial purpose of reading books. The only thing they focus on is study. If children realize that storybooks and picture books are used to learn English, they will not have any pleasure while reading books. To let them know the reading for pleasure is the biggest purpose of this article. Some examples can be studied in this article to explain how to read, react and play with children through storytelling. I also refer what activities I did using storybooks and picture books in class. Knowing what and how to choose books for children, how to read and play, and what to make with children can be the important step for understanding the world and developing language skills through reading books.
