Some Notes on Abraham Kuyper's Common Grace

'신칼빈주의(neo-calvinisme)'운동의 선구자인 아브라함 카이퍼는 1880년 자유대학교 개교 연설에서'영역주권'이란 크게 외쳤다.' 영역주권'은 개혁파 신학의 기초를 놓은 16세기 제네바의 개혁자 존 칼빈(John Calvin, 1509-1564)의 하나님의 절대주권 사상을 다시 주창하였을 뿐만 아니라, 한 걸음 더 나아가 이 절대주권 사상을 인간의 보편적 삶의 모든 영역에 구체적으로 적용할 것을 강조한 신학사상이다. 이 영역주권 사상은 무엇보다도 일반은총 교리와 밀접하게 연관된다. 일반은총 교리는 예수 그리스도 안에서 약속된 구원을 얻는 특별은총 교리와 짝을 이루는 것으로 인간 삶의 모든 영역에서의 하나님의 주권사상을 잘 드러낸 교리이다. 불행하게도 오늘날 많은 한국교회는 세상의 빛과 소금으로서의 그 역할과 존재성을 상실하고, 마침내 사람들의 발에 밟히는 수모를 겪고 있다. 동시에 교회 내부적으로는'나만 잘 믿고 복 받으면 된다'는 기복신앙으로 만연된 신자들이 적지 않다. 어떤 의미에서 세상으로부터 동떨어진'도피성'경건주의자들이 많은 현실이다. 이러한 때에 신자들과 교회가 다시금 우리의 선행의 빛을 통해 세상 사람들로 하여금 하늘에 계신 하나님께 영광을 돌리도록 살아야 할 책무(마5:16)를 상기하는 것이 필요하다. 이것이 바로 약 120여 년 전에 네덜란드의 개혁파 신학자 아브라함 카이퍼가 일반은총 교리를 통해 이루고자 했던 비전이다.

At the inaugration speech of Free University in 1880, Abraham Kuyper, a pioneer of 'neo-calvinisme' movement, shouts 'the sphere of sovereignty' to the world. 'The sphere of sovereignty' is a theological idea that advocates again the idea of the absolute sovereignty of God emphasized by the 16th century Genvan Reformer John Calvin(1509-1564), who laid the base of reformed theology. Moreover, 'the sphere of sovereignty' also stresses that the absolute sovereignty of God should specifically be applied to all domain of people's life. It is above all intimately related to the doctrine of common grace. The doctrine of common grace is a counterpart to the doctrine of particular grace which gives salvation promised in Jesus Christ. Unfortunately nowadays many Korean churches lost her role and existence as the light and salt of the world, and greatly suffers to be trempled by people. At the same time there are many christians in the church who think 'Everything is Ok, only if I may be blessed.' In a sense it cannot be denied that there are many so called 'godly' people secluded themselves from society. In this situation we christians need to remind our responsibility to let our light shine before men, that they may see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven (Matt. 5:16). This is the very vision that Dutch reforemd theologian Abraham Kuyper wanted to achieve by promoting the doctrine of common grace around 120 years ago.
