조선후기 지식인의 생업에 대한 인식과 현실적 대응

A Study on the Cognition of Vocation and Practical Actions by Intelligentsia in the Late Choseon Dynasty -With Focus on the Baek-Woon(白雲) Shim Dae-Yoon(沈大允) in the 19th Century

본고는 白雲 沈大允(1806∼1872)을 중심으로 조선후기 지식인이 학문과 도덕의 수양을 통해 경제적 자립을 마련하지 못한 경우 상공업에 종사하여 생계를 유지한 사실을 확인하였다. 심대윤이 노모와 어린 두 동생을 부양하기 위해 목반을 만들고 약을 판 행적을 기록한 글은 매우 중요하다. 비록 몰락한 처지이긴 하지만 명문 사대부가 출신으로 생계를 위해 직접 상공업에 종사한 데다 이를 기록으로 자세하게 남긴 경우는 드물기 때문이다. 그는 땀 흘려 일한 대가로 가족의 생계를 유지한 것에 대한 기쁨을 표출하고 신성한 노동의 가치를 재발견하였다. 그러나 그 이면에서는 사람들의 차가운 시선과 士의 정체성 상실로 인한 내적 갈등이 심화되면서 이를 극복하기 위해 '變通'의 논리를 제시하여 논리적 대응을 모색하였다. 이 글은 조선후기 한 몰락 지식인의 생계를 유지하기 위한 현실적이며 적극적 대응과 그로 인한 고뇌와 갈등을 통해 인간적 초상을 확인했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

This paper examines intelligentsia in the late Choseon dynasty who were not financially independent by studying and cultivating morals engaged in commercial and industrial circles focused on Baek-Woon(白雲) Shim Dae-Yoon(沈大允, 1806∼1872). It is a very important document that Shim Dae-Yoon engaged in commercial and industrial circles such as making wood block and selling medicine to maintain his aged mother and two younger brothers. Because it rarely remains document which is related to working commerce and industry as a noble family, even though they fall in their circumstances. Shim Dae-Yoon expressed of joy on supporting his family and rediscovered value of working for his hard work he did. But, he experienced an inner conflict because of cold eyes and lost of identity as classical scholar. To overcome, he insisted on a logical argument called Byeontong(變通). It is meaningful that this paper reveals intelligentsia in the late Choseon dynasty who had practical actions and inner conflict to earn a scant living.
