제주의 영등신앙에 나타난 어업

Fishery in Youngdeun Faith in Jeju -Focased on Chilmoridang Youngdeunggut

본 연구는 제주도 어민들의 삶에 깊이 관여하는 <칠머리당영등굿>을 통해, 어민들의 생업 활동에서 무속 의례가 갖는 의미와 특성을 확인하는데 목적이 있다. 특히 어업에 종사하는 이들에게 제의가 미치는 관련 약호들을 규명함으로써 신화적 세계와 현실 세계와의 소통 양상을 이해하고자 한다. 영등굿은 바다 지역 주민들에게 중요하게 인식되어 전해지는 풍어제(&#35920;漁祭)이다. 섬마을 제주에서도 바다에서의 수확과 안전을 기원하기 위해 많은 제의들이 행해지는데, 그 중에서도 매년 음력 2월에 치르는 영등굿이 가장 규모가 크고 성대하게 행하는 의식이다. 제주도에서 특히 바다 관련 제의가 중요할 수밖에 없는 이유는 그 지리적 특성상 '바다' 공간은 가장 많은 사람들에게 생업의 수단이자 삶의 터전이 되기 때문이다. 또한 예부터 제주에서의 무속의례는 전통적으로 민간 신앙의 중심 역할을 꾀하며, 개인의 종교 생활은 물론 마을 주민의 문화 행사로 자리매김하였다. 바다 지역에 사는 어민들에게 생업과 신앙 활동은 맥을 같이 한다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 정황을 고려할 때에, 전승집단의 신화적 세계관을 이해하고 제의에 참여하는 어민들의 생활상을 들여다보는 것이 가능하다. 오늘날 행해지는 제의 상황과 참여자들의 심리적 요인들, 뿐만 아니라 제의와 관련한 많은 콘텍스트 상황의 변수들이 오늘날의 신화와 제의가 갖는 현대적인 의미를 결정지을 것이다. <제주칠머리당영등굿>의 참여자들은 대부분 어업 관련 종사자들이며, 제의가 그들의 생업을 위해 행해진다는 점에 있어서 굿의 목적이 뚜렷하게 드러나는 굿이다. 특히 실제 현실 세계에서 제의를 중시하는 인식의 발로를 신화를 통해 살펴봄으로써, 무속 의례 활동은 해상활동과 생활양식에 지대한 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있다. 해상 사고로부터 안전을 도모하고, 바다 채취의 어업을 기원하는 어민들의 믿음은 그만큼 생업에 충실했음을 방증(傍證)하기도 한다.

The purpose of this study is looking into meanings and features of shaman ritual to the livelihood of fishermen through Chilmoridang youngdeunggut, which is deeply involved in the fishermen's lives in Jeju. Especially, it is due to understand communicative aspects between the mythical world and the real world by investigating relevant codes of ritual to those who are engaged in the fishery industry. Youngdeunggut is Poong-eo-je, which is considered important to the residents of the sea. Although there are a number of rituals in Jeju so as to pray for both a good yield and safety in the sea, among them is Youngdeunggut, held in February by the lunar calendar, the biggest and most magnificent. The reason why sea-related rituals are particularly vital in Jeju is that because of the geographical characteristic, the 'sea region' may as well the living foundation as well as the means of livelihood to most residents. Also, the shamanistic ceremonies in Jeju traditionally have meant to play a key role of folk beliefs for a long time and become not just personal religion also cultural events for the local residents. Paying attention to especially the sea-related rituals to reconstruct their lives will contribute to comprehending close correlation between mythology and ritual to them. It seems that to the sea residents making their livelihood by fishing is in line with practicing religious activities. Considering these circumstances, it is possible to grasp this tradition group's world view on the mythological world and to look into fishermen's lives, who take part in the ritual. Also, many variables in the ritual related contextual circumstances as well as today's ritual situations and participant's psychological factors will determine the contemporary meanings of what mythology and ritual are today. Jeju Chilmoridang youngdeunggut has a distinctive characteristic for living. Especially, it is true that shamanism rituals and forms of religion have a great influence on their marine activities and mode of life by examining their expression of recognition through mythology, which puts importance on the ritual in the real world. The faith in making their own safety from marine accidents and praying for the fine yields from the sea throws a sideline on their being devoted to making livelihood by fishing.
