조선후기 물명서의 편찬동기와 분류체계

The classification system of a book for the names of objects in the late Choson Dynasty

이 논문의 목적은 조선후기 물명서의 편찬동기를 당대적 관점에서 조명하고, 현전하는 물명서의 분류체계를 분석함으로써 물명서의 성격을 재검토하는데 있다. 물명서의 근본적인 목적은 독자로 하여금 언어와 그 언어가 지시하는 대상을 일치시켜 해당 언어가 지시하는 대상을 정확히 인식하도록 하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 물명서의 편자들은 한자어 어휘에 해당하는 또다른 한자어 어휘 및 고유어 어휘를 제시함으로써 언어와 대상의 일치를 도모하였다. 그간 물명서는 사물에 대한 자세한 정보를 제공하는 유서(類書)의 일종으로 간주되었으나, 현전하는 물명서는 사물의 이칭을 제시하는 데 머무르는 것이 대부분이다. 이러한 물명서는 언어와 대상의 일치를 목적으로 하는 자서(字書)의 일종으로 보는 것이 온당하다. 또한 물명서의 분류체계를 검토해보면, 구체적인 사물에 큰 비중을 할애하였다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 천(天), 지(地), 인(人)에 비해 상대적으로 소외되었던 물(物)에 대한 관심의 고조를 반영한다. 그간 물명서는 명청대 백과사전식 유서의 영향을 받은 것으로 알려졌는데, 추상적인 개념보다 구체적인 사물에 큰 비중을 할애한 물명서의 분류체계는 본초서의 영향을 받은 것으로 보인다.

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the motive for a compilation of a book for the names of objects in the late Choson Dynasty from the perspectives at the time, and review the features of the book for the names of objects by analyzing the classification system of a currently existing book for the names of objects. The fundamental purpose of the book is to let readers accurately recognize the target which the words indicate by matching the words and the objects which are indicated. Thus, editors of the book try to match the words and objects by presenting Korean words and different Chinese words corresponding to the original one. The book for the names of objects has been regarded as a kind of Chinese classical encyclopedias which provides detailed information on objects, but most of existing books just present the names of objects. It is natural to regard the book as a kind of a dictionary with the purpose to match words and objects. In addition, when the classification system of the book is reviewed, it is found to mainly deal with specific objects. It suggests that interests in objects which are relatively neglected compared to Sky, Land and Humans are being highlighted. It has been known that the books for the names of objects are influenced by the Chinese classical encyclopedias in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The classification system of the book dealing with specific objects rather than abstract concept seems to be influenced by medicinal herb books which provide a variety of information on objects.
