Developing Spoken Discourse Skills in English through Movies

Developing discourse competence can be the best method to teach how to speak and what to say coherently and proficiently in English. The more students observe and analyse proper or common English discourses, and the more students imitate and learn new ways of thinking from these, the better their speaking skills become. This research defined the concept of discourse competence newly and strikingly, based on existing rationale, and presents a model of discourse competence. This model has an in-between medium that is composed of three levels, point of view, information-making and stories-making. These three levels of discourse competence are proposed to give teachers and students a more tangible and easier way to target discourse factors involved in appropriate language use. To present the best examples of English discourse and models of discourse competence, this research drew on twelve coherent discourses which demonstrated ways of thinking clearly and the three levels of discourse competence model from four selected movie scripts. Based on these discourses, a new, more effective textbook and discourse syllabus were developed for this research.
