This study focuses on coherence and cohesion in movie discourse. In fact, movies are very popular teaching resources for both teachers and learners. A teacher should have a clear understanding of the reason for their popularity before using movies in a class. Why does a movie appeal to students? What does a movie contain that makes it effective for English teaching and learning? In order to attempt to answer this question, this study compares two commonly used English conversation textbooks with the discourse of the movie Matchstick Man. The results show that two factors influence learner preference for movie discourse. First, movie discourse has strong coherence and cohesion; second it has language forms and functions that are easier to understand. If English conversation textbooks develop more coherence and cohesion in their language examples, they will be more beneficial for learners.
