Language is a means of communication. Likewise, the purpose of learning a second language is also to communicate with speakers of the language, whether it is the communication between non-native speakers and native speakers or between non-native speakers and non-native speakers. Therefore, teaching pronunciation of English as a second, foreign, or international language, should aim to teach aspects of pronunciation which improve learners' intelligibility and comprehensibility, which affect success of communication. Research has shown that the best way to improve learners' intelligibility and comprehensibility is to teach suprasegmental features such as stress and intonation rather than segmental features. The suprasegmental features of English are context dependent. Therefore, the effective way to teach suprasegmental features is to present them in a larger context as in movies. This paper will show how we can use movies in teaching English pronunciation, especially, the suprasegmental features. Using movies in teaching pronunciation is desirable because movies provide authentic speech samples to learners within a larger discourse context.
