A Study on a Business English Teaching-Learning Method Using Movies and Videos

Business communication skills have been an important factor in enhancing the competitiveness of countries and organizations due to the increase in international business as a result of the globalization. Our educational institutions still don't meet the needs of learners and industry. In order to cultivate a business professional manpower equipped with practical English competence and communication skills that are required in the workplace at university level in Korea, this study develops a business English teaching-learning method using movies & videos, applies it to the 'Business English' classes which consist of forty-three students during the fall semester of 2012 and evaluates the effectiveness of the method. Questionnaires are used to collect the data. The result shows that most of the participants of this study think that the method makes it easier to learn (81.4%), is fun (95.3%), motivates learning (72.1%), enables them to learn a variety of English pronunciation and intonation (86%), exposes them to actual spoken language (81.4%), helps to strengthen communication skills (81.4%), provides the opportunity to practice English (72.1%), enables them to learn about foreign business culture (86%), and encourages cooperative learning (43.5%). As for the effectiveness of the method, 93% of the participants show positive responses.
