This dissertation examines methods and contents of annotations and compares annotations by 'Yang Shang Shan(楊上善)' with those by 'Wang Bingi(王冰)'. It is accomplished in terms of the two comparative examinations laying stress on the cosmic dual forces, the Five Elements, the four seasons, Taoism, the internal organs, and organic diseases based on the medicine of internal meridian. The results are characterized as follows: 'Huang Di Nei Jing Tai Su(『黃帝內經太素』)' consisting of 162 chapters of 'Su Wen(『素問』)' and 'Ling Shu(『靈樞』)' was reorganized into 20 classes in accordance with its contents, and then each class was divided into a few smaller classes. So it was established in good order and the system of the original text was considerably enhanced. 'Yang Shang Shan' made a first attempt in the classification of 'Nei Jing(『內經』)' and opened a good new method of this study. His annotations were written in laconical style throughout the books on the basis of scholia of a Chinese classic. The original was not modified on his own authority so that it has been well conserved. Wang Bing filed volumes of 'Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen(『黃帝內經素問』)' and annotated displaying his originality. He never mentioned any words in a few parts or just picked up quotation, from other books in other parts, while he annotated down to the minutest detail in the part of astronomy. 'Li Xiang(曆象)', 'Shi Ling(時令)', etc. which he was interested in. To sum up, Yang's annotations are rich in ideas and are refined although they are slightly inclined to speculative trends, while Wang's annotations are specific and profound and are expressed easily but to some extent arbitrarily. It has been believed that the differences of interpretation come from their surroundings of the age and personal characters. First of all, the differences mainly result from a different point of view that they had. 'Tai Su(『太素』)' was officially written by 'Yang Shang Shan', who was a government of official and took an official order from government, while 'Su Wen(『素問』)' was personally written by 'Wang Bing', a government official not related to medicine. 'Yang Shang Shan' contributed much to the art of acupuncture. He described each route of vitality and arranged the spots on the body important for acupuncture. He formulated a unified system combined with the meridian routes and spots by describing acupuncture points, the methods of selecting the spots and the common treatments in detail. So far, I have comparatively examined medical ideas between 'Yang Shang Shan's annotations for 'Huang Di Nei Jing Tai Su' and Wang Bing's annotations for 'Huang Di Nei Jin Su Wen'. This study has some difficulty approaching what the two medical practitioners intended to do because the times when they lived are very far from today. But it is worth studying their medical ideas because both were pioneers who expounded oriental medicine theoretically. It is expected that deeper research about the two medical practitioners will be accomplished in the near future.
