This study attempts to compare and elucidate, through the technique of mise en abyme, the characteristics of Gide's The Counterfeiters and Shakespeare's Hamlet. In various genres of art, mise en abyme emerges as a story within a story, a play within a play, and a picture within a picture. By means of this mise en abyme as a formal technique, The counterfeiters goes beyond being a text that simply refers to and represents reality, and becomes a self-referential and self-reflective one. And a play within a play as mise en abyme in Shakespeare's Hamlet makes it possible that the play not only represents reality and but reflects and refers to the play itself. Therefore Gide's The Counterfeiters and Shakespeare's Hamlet have something in common in respect of the self-referential and self-reflective text. At this point they have their modern characteristics connected with a number of modern artworks.
