A Study of Characteristics of Object Expression in Hat Design -Focusing on Philip Treacy designs-

This study attempted to analyze the objects expressed in Philip Treacy's hats after investigating the concept of object and object types within fine art trends. For this, a literature review focusing on related books and previous studies was conducted. The in-depth descriptive analysis of qualitative research was undertaken to discover the characteristics. In terms of research scope and analysis target, Philip Treacy's collections in firstVIEW (http://www.firstview.com), the world's oldest online fashion database and photo archive, from 1996 to 2004 were selected. As a result, object types in hat design were divided into natural objects, artificial objects, symbolic objects and objects of motion. An object's characteristics in hat design were expressed in the form of a nonconforming combination, introduction of art trends and reflection of fluidity. These results show that an object in hat design proposes novelty in unusualness, an escape from dichotomous thinking and infinite possibilities for new design.
