사회적 통합과 자살률의 관계 검증

Testing the Relationship between Social Integration and Suicide: Focusing on the Data of City and Town

이 연구의 목적은 사회적 통합이 자살률에 미치는 영향을 시군구자료에 기초하여 분석하는데 있다. 뒤르케임은 사회적 통합이 약화되면 자살률이 증가한다고 주장하며 사회적 통합을 나타내는 중요한 요인으로 가정의 통합과 종교의 통합 강조하고 있다. 기존 국내 자살률연구에서는 가정의 통합과 자살률의 관계에 대한 논의는 심도 깊게 진행되었으나 종교적 통합이라는 주제에 대해서는 크게 논의되지 않았다. 또한 자살연구의 최근 경향은 미시적 수준을 벗어나 거시적인 시각에서 자살이라는 사회적 현상을 이해하고자 노력하고 있으므로 사회적 통합을 대표하는 가정의 통합과 종교적 통합을 사용하여 우리사회의 자살발생의 원인을 파악하는 것은 시의적절한 연구주제이다. 이 연구의 수행을 위해 연구자는 기존 국내외 자살연구들을 종합적으로 정리하고 사회적 통합과 자살률의 관계를 증명하기 위한 연구모델을 구성하고자 하였다. 또한 217개 시군구 자살데이터 및 구조적 요인에 관한 자료를 수집하였다. 분석결과 자살률은 농촌지역을 중심으로 매우 높게 나타났으나 사회적 통합을 나타내는 종교와 이혼에 관한 변인으로는 이 현상을 설명할 수 없었다. 또한 고령화와 빈곤은 자살률에 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나 그 영향은 사회적 통합을 고려할 때 미약해지는 것으로 나타났고 대도시와 중소도시의 자살률에 국한하는 것으로 나타났다. 흥미롭게도 불교인의 비율이 높은 도시지역에서는 자살률이 높게 나타났으며 기독교와 천주교인의 비율이 높은 지역에서는 자살률이 낮게 나타났다. 사회적 통합을 나타내는 변인 중 이혼율은 자살률을 예측하는데 가장 중요한 요인이었으나 농촌지역의 자살률과는 관련성이 없었다. 결과적으로 자살률과 사회적 통합의 관계는 도시화정도에 의해 그 관련성이 달라진다는 의미 있는 결과에 도달하였다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between social integration and suicide based on the data of cities and towns in Korea. Durkheim argued that the weakened social integration, mainly family and religious integration, may increase suicide in a society. Previous studies in Korea seems to focus on the effect of family integration, but religious integration. In addition, recent trend of suicide study turns to macro level explanation rather than micro level of study so that this study which focuses on social integration with family and religion are much more appropriate in this moment. To accomplish this study the author reviewed a bunch of literature related to the suicide and suggest an analytic model for testing the relationship between social integration and suicide. In addition, the author gathered the suicide data from 217 cities and towns. The result shows that the rate of suicide is very higher in rural area rather than urban area. However, social integration perspective. fails to explain this high rate of suicide in rural area. The rate of aged population and poverty generally seems to increase the rate of suicide. But controlling social integration variables, these effects are disappeared or weakened and these effects only exist in urban cities. Interestingly, Cities and Towns with higher rate of Buddhist have also higher level of suicide, while the higher rate of Christian and Catholic believers in cities and towns shows the lower rate of suicide. The most important factor predicting the suicide is the rate of divorce in cities and towns. But this effect disappears in rural area. In sum, these results show that the relationship between social integration and suicide is depending on the level of urbanization.
