국내 경찰행정학 교육은 다양한 패러다임 속에서 연구 및 교육 분야에서 비약적인 성장을 이룩하였다. 그러나 IMF 등 금융위기에 따른 세계적인 변화는 각 분야에 다양한 영향을 미쳤으며, 특히 실업률과 치안분야에 큰 관심을 가지게 되었다. 따라서 대학 졸업자들의 취업에 대한 관심도는 공공분야로 증가하기 시작하였다. 그러나 경찰행정학을 포함한 사회과학 전공자들의 공공분야의 진출은 어려워지고, 외부적으로 경찰행정학 출신 졸업자들의 전문성의 희석으로 인해 경찰행정학과 관련된 졸업생들에게 이중부담으로 작용하게 되었다. 또한 정보화로 인한 지식기반상업의 여파로 보다 고도의 기술과 창의적인 인재를 요구하는 현시점에서 대학 내의 경찰행정학 전공자들이 갖추어야할 역량에 대한 새로운 지표 및 구체적인 방안을 논의할 시기가 도래한 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 해결책의 제시에 앞서 앞으로 경찰행정학 전공자들이 나아가야할 방향 제시를 위해 가장 중심에 있는 학부생들과 대학 내 경찰행정학 관련 전공의 교과과정 및 수업 내용 등 다양한 영역별 평가에서 문제점을 탐구하고, 문제점에 대한 분석근거를 바탕으로 향후 미래지향적인 측면에서 다양한 논의가 될 수 있도록 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다.
