As Latin America s role in the world economy increases, the region is becoming a major partner for the Republic of Korea. A geographical distance between Korea and Latin America becomes less important as the relation is being strengthened. Brazil is one of the large economies in Latin America. Brazilian foreign policy in the 21st century operates through reciprocal multilateralism. Brazil is engaged in negotiations for the expansion of existing agreements (MERCOSUR) or the signing of several new free trade agreements (MERCOSUR-EU FTA, FTAA, MERCOSUR-CAN agreement, among others). To improve the Korea-Brazil trade environment, following points should be reviewed. First, it is necessary to diversify export items that are limited to several items. Second, Korea should pursue an FTA with Mercosur, the representative economic bloc in the region, to take a good share of Latin American markets, beyond Chile and Peru. This paper analyzes the recent trends of problems of trade between Korea and Brazil and suggests solutions for boosting trade to provide proper strategic guidelines for Korea that are planning to expand to Brazilian market.
