시적 공간과 자연의 호명

The Poetic Space and Nature's Call: Focused on the Thought-experiment of Magritte's <The Waterfall>

마그리트는 가시적인 것과의 사고실험을 통해 비가시적인 세계를 표현한 대표적인 현대 화가다. 그의 이러한 사고실험은 '사유공간의 시학화'라는 바슐라르적 화두와 맥이 닿는다. 본고에서 분석한 <폭포> 역시 일종의 자연-풍경화처럼 보이지만 그가 감추어둔, 지향하는 미학은 단순히 자연-대상의 재현에 있는 것이 아니라 자연 자체를 감상자 앞에 호명하는데 있다. 그의 대부분의 작품들은 이렇게 우리의 사고습관, 지적 편견을 뒤흔든다. 그렇게 함으로써 마그리트가 노린 것은 결국 비가시적인 것, 즉 형이상학적 신비를 가시적인 형태를 빌어 새롭게 제시하는데 있다. 인간의 행복은 계산ㆍ측정 가능한 것일 수 없다. 삶과 사유의 공간이 시학화(poeticalize)될 때 비로소 인간은 자신과의 내밀하고 심도 깊은 대화를 나눌 수 있고, 수치화ㆍ계량화가 불가능한 공간에 진입할 수 있다. (자연적) 자연의 공간이 하루가 다르게 문명의 이기(利器)들에 의해 잠식되어가고 있는 현실이다. 역설적으로, 그럴수록 우리는 자연, 나아가 인간의 본성에 대한 근원적 질문을 던지게 된다. 현대문명의 상징인 사각(四角)의 세계는 인간에게 결코 행복을 선사하지 않는다. 현실ㆍ물리적 공간은 물론이고 형이상학적인 공간, 미학적 공간까지도 전유(專有)하려는 이기적(반자연적) 태도로부터 벗어나 자신만의 정신적ㆍ시적 공간을 확대시켜가야 하는 이유가 여기에 있다.

Ren&eacute; Magritte is a representative modern painter who expressed the invisible world by the thought-experiment of visible things. His thought-experiment is reached to the poeticalization of thought space, as known as the main theme of Gaston Bachelard. Alhough <The waterfall> is looked like a natural-landscape painting, Magritte's aim is not a representation of a forest as nature-object, but a call to nature itself in front of the viewer. Like this, most of his paintings shake our customary thought and intellectual prejudice. In this way, what Magritte seeks is to propose refreshingly invisible things, namely metaphysical mystery in the visible form. Human happiness can't be countable nor measurable. When the space of life and thought is poeticalized, humans can dialogize themself in depth and enter the uncountable and unmeasurable space at last. These days, the space of (natural) nature is encroached by modern conveniences. Paradoxically, we make a question about the nature of nature and human nature. The world of square, as a symbol of modern civilization, never allow humans to be happy. That is the reason why we free ourself from selfish and nonnatural attitude that possesses exclusively not only the real and physical space, but also the metaphysical and aesthetic space. We must enlarge our own mental and poetic space.
