한국과 일본 정원문화에 함축된 철학과 미의식

Philosophy and Aesthetic Consciousness Implied in Japan and Korea's Landscape Gardening Traditions: Based on Japan's Ryoanji and Korea's Buyongji

본고는 유네스코 세계유산으로 등재되어 있는 일본 교토(京都)의 선사(禅寺)인 료안지(龍安寺)와 한국 서울의 창덕궁 후원(後苑) 부용지(芙蓉池)에 함축된 철학과 미의식을 분석한 논문이다. 일본의 료안지는 선불교 코드를 함축한 정원으로, 선(禪, Zen)의 정신을 고도로 함축한 정원이다. 따라서 료안지 정원은 돌아다니면서 감상하는 정원이 아니라, 한 곳에서 조용히 바라보면서 관조하고 사색하는 정적인 정원이다. 반면에 창덕궁 부용지는 성리학 코드가 함축되어 있는 정원으로 물경(物景), 정경(情景), 의경(義景)이 가능하도록 설계된 정원이다. 부용지는 단순히 한 곳에서 조망하며 감상하는 정원이 아니라 학문과 정치 공간으로도 활용된 동적인 공간이다. 그런데 이들 정원에 함축된 철학과 미의식을 분석하는 과정에서 발견한 사실은, 선불교 코드의 대표적 정원으로 세계적으로 유명한 료안지는 선불교의 철학보다 이미지, 즉 미의식에 치중하고 있는 이미지텔링의 정원에 가까웠다. 반면에 자연과 동화되어 아무 것도 담지 않은 것처럼 보이는 한국 정원은 정원의 경물을 이미지텔링하여 당대의 철학을 완벽하게 인코딩(encoding) 하고 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 일본 정원은 세계 정원사에 독보적인 지위를 차지하고 있는데 반해, 한국 정원이 차지하는 위상은 아직 미미하다. 그 이유는 한국 정원은 자연과 정원의 구분이 어려울 정도로 자연과 정원이 물아일체(物我一體)가 되어 있기 때문이다. 따라서 한국 정원에 인코딩되어 있는 철학과 미의식을 우리 스스로 제대로 디코딩(decoding) 해내지 못하면, 한국 정원의 아름다움을 제대로 알릴 수가 없다.

This thesis is an analysis of the philosophy and aesthetic consciousness implied in two UNESCO World Heritage sites - Ryoanji, a Zen temple in Kyoto, Japan and Buyongji, the Changdeokgung's main backyard landscape element which is located in Seoul, Korea. Japan's Ryoanji is a garden that poignantly portrays the spirit of Zen Buddhism. On the other hand, Buyongji of Changdeokgung is designed to accommodate three appreciations - object appreciation, landscape appreciation and psychological appreciation. During the process of analyzing the philosophy and aesthetic consciousness implied in the these gardens, it was revealed that the Japanese garden, which is acclaimed worldwide as the most renowned Zen Buddhism code garden, is actually an image-telling garden that is lopsided toward the aesthetics consciousness, rather than focusing on the Zen Buddhism philosophy. On the other hand, the Korean garden that looks somewhat desolate by being assimilated with the surrounding nature was actually perfectly "encoding" pertinent period's philosophy by image-telling its landscape elements.
