자살 관련 설화의 특성과 인식 연구

Characteristics and Perception of Suicide-related Tales

현재 우리사회의 높은 자살률에 대한 원인으로 전통사회와 달리 급속한 경제적 발전과 사회적 분화에 따른 생명 경시 풍조를 지적한다. 올바른 생명의식을 갖추지 못해 현실을 회피하고, 가족이나 지인을 생각하지 못하는 이기주의가 자살의 근저에 자리 잡고 있다는 것이다. 하지만 자살은 전통사회에서도 빈번히 발생했으며, 종종 사회 문제로 대두되기도 했다. 자살은 개인만의 문제가 아닌 사회적, 집단적 관점에서 깊이 있는 고찰을 필요로 하는 문제이다. 이 글에서는 자살에 대한 전통 사회의 인식을 살펴보기 위해 여성 인물의 자살을 주요 모티프로 다루고 있는 구비와 문헌설화들을 자살의 원인에 따라 나누어 살펴본 뒤 설화의 시공간적 배경을 중심으로 이야기에 투영된 사회적 인식을 살펴보려 하였다. 작품에 드러나는 시공간적 특이성은 인물이 특정 시공간에서 그렇게 행동할 수밖에 없었던 당위성을 찾을 수 있게 해주며, 그 사회의 특성을 반영한다는 점에서 매우 중요한 요소이다. 전통사회가 자살을 어떻게 바라보고 있는지를 되돌아보는 것은 아직도 강한 연관 아래 있는 오늘날 우리 사회가 자살에 대해 어떤 관점을 가져야 할지를 되돌아보고 시각을 확장하는 계기가 된다는 점에서 의의가 있을 것이다.

As one of the causes for a high suicide rate in Korea, some point out a rapid development of our economy and a trend to make light of human life caused by social differentiation unlike our traditional society. In other words, since many people do not have a right awareness of life, they avoid reality, and egoism makes them not think of their families and others, further leading to an attempt of suicide. Even in our traditional society, however, some people might think of committing a suicide, which was difficult to regard as a taboo they must not do. It was because people committed suicides frequently even in the past, which was often brought up as a social issue. A suicide does not take place out of sudden these days, and it cannot be considered as an individual problem only, so we should consider it in depth from a social point of view. Thus, this study aims to investigate oral folktales and literature tales dealing with suicides as a main motif in order to find out a certain group’s awareness of suicides found in the temporal and spacial backgrounds of such stories. Particularly, this study adapted Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of ‘Chronotope’. Finding out how our traditional society regarded a suicide may provide us with a ‘Link’ through which we can look back our past and what viewpoint we should have on suicides in our modern society still under a strong association between the present and the past. Moreover, since no study ever attempted to discuss‘suicides’through folktales in earnest, it is meaningful that this study made an attempt to expand research perspectives on suicides.
