조선시대 개인의 자살, 사회적 타살

A Individual Suicide and Social Homicide : through cases of suicide in ≪Chosun Dynasty Annals(朝鮮王朝實錄)≫

본고는 조선 태조부터 철종까지의 역사를 기록한 ≪조선왕조실록≫에 나타난 자살 사례를 중심으로, 조선 시대 자살의 유형과 이 시대 개인의 자살에 개입한 사회적 요인을 분석하고 있다. ≪조선왕조실록≫은 백성들의 일상에서 펼쳐지는 다양한 자살 사건을 포괄하지는 못하지만, 사회적 이슈가 될 법한 중대 자살 사건을 수록하고 있어 자살의 사회적 요인을 분석하기에 좋은 텍스트이다. 본고의 논의는 두 가지 점을 전제한다. 하나는 자살이 개인의 실천으로 이루어지는 행위라고는 하지만 사회적 요인이 그 실천에 개입한다는 것이고, 다른 하나는 오늘날 실효성 있는 자살 예방 정책을 수립하기 위해서는 통시적 관점에서 한국 사회의 자살을 조망할 필요가 있다는 점이 그것이다. ≪조선왕조실록≫에 기록된 자살 사건에서 사용된 자살 방법을 살펴보면, 가장 많이 보이는 것은 ‘미상’이다. 이는 자살 방법보다 자살 사건의 정 치적 배경에 초점을 맞춘 텍스트의 특성 때문이다. 자살 방법을 기록하고 있는 사건에서는 自縊, 飮毒, 칼, 投江, 焚身, 禁食, 投身의 순이다. 이들은 조선시대 흔히 사용된 자살 방법을 보여준다. 다음으로 자살의 원인을 살펴보면‘억울함’,‘분노와 절망’,‘충절과 정절 그리고 자애’,‘도피’등의 원인으로 자살한 사례가 나타난다. 이러한 자살의 원인은 자살자 개인에게 주어진 상황으로 이해될 수도 있지만, 그 이면에는 이들 자살 원인에 개입한 사회적 요소도 간과할 수 없다. 먼저‘억울함’에 기인한 자살은 잘 짜여진 사회의 억압 구조 속에서 개인의 자존감이 박탈당하면서 생기는 자살이다. 즉 부조리한 사회 구조를 숙명으로 받아들여야만 하는 개인이 선택할 수밖에 없는 강요된 자살인 것이다.‘분노와 절망’에 기인한 자살은 권력자 중심으로 고착화된 사회 규범에 대항할 수 없는 개인이 그것에 절망감을 느끼면서 벗어나기 위해 선택한 유일한 탈출구이다.‘충절과 정절 그리고 자애’에 기인한 자살은 집단의 힘이 개인을 완전히 압도하는 사회 속에서‘忠’과‘烈’같은 사회적 명예를 얻기 위한 자살이다. 이러한 사회에서 사회적 명예의 포기는 사회적 처벌의 효과를 갖는다는 점에서 이들의 자살에는 적극적인 사회적 강요가 개입되는 것이다. 반면‘도피’에 기인한 자살은 개인의 과도한 사욕을 채우기 위한 행위의 결과로 죽음을 선택한 경우다. 이 자살은 사회적 요인의 개입보다는 개인의 선택의 결과로 보인다. 주로 사회적 결속력이 낮은 사회에서 발생하는 자살이다.

This paper focuses on the cases of suicide in ≪Chosun Dynasty Annals≫ which recorded history from King Taejo to King Cheol-jong in Chosun dynasty, and analysis suicide type and social factors into individual suicide on Chosun period. ≪Chosun Dynasty Annals≫ is a good text for analysing social factors into a individual suicides. Because even thought ≪Chosun Dynasty Annals≫ did not include various suicides of the people on daily life, but contain important suicide cases which is made a social issue. The argument of this paper is on the premise that a social factors intervene in individual suicides, even though the suicides are the individual action, and it is necessary that survey a suicide of Korean society with diachronic view for establishing effective suicide prevention policy in the present. In terms of a suicide method, top on the list of a suicide method were unknownness. The reason unknownness is top is because of the features of ≪Chosun Dynasty Annals≫ that focuses on a political background of suicide than the suicide of way. In the incident that records the way of suicide, it is displayed in the order to‘to hang oneself(自縊)’,‘to poison oneself(飮毒)’,‘suicide by sword’,‘to drown oneself to river(投江)’,‘to burn oneself(焚身)’, 'to fast oneself(禁食)’,‘to drown onesef from a high place(投身)’. This order shows us suicide methods that commonly used in the Chosun dynasty. Examining cause of suicide, there are lots of suicide cases that have cause of a‘injustice’,‘anger and despair’,‘loyalty, fidelity and love of mother’and‘escape’. The cause of these suicide might be understood in the context given suicide individuals, and also can not be overlooked social factors that intervene in the cause of these suicide. First, the suicide due to‘injustice’is some kind of a suicide that come from personal self-esteem deprived in the suppression structure of society. In other words, it is a forced suicides that a person who accept the absurd social structure as a fate can takes. The suicide due to‘anger and despair’is some kind of suicide that Individual despair that can not be against social norms which was made for a a superiors men. It is the only escape from the despair. The suicide due to ‘loyalty, fidelity and love of mother’is some kinds of suicide for obtaining social honor such as ‘忠’ and ‘烈’. But the social honor is a social pressure, because it is not allowed to abandon the honor to live. While the suicide due to ‘escape’ is the result of actions to meet excessive desire for individuals. So there are no social factors forced to a individuals.
