이태준 <화관>의 상징성 연구

The study of Symbolism of Hwagwan by Lee Tae-jun

본고는 이태준의 <화관>을 고대 ‘화관’의 두 가지 상징성을 바탕으로 분석하고, <화관>이 보여주는 복합적인 세계를 ‘화관’의 상징성이라는 기제로써 밝히고자 하였다. 먼저 본고는 <화관>의 상징성을‘신부가 쓰는 결혼 예식의 화관’의 모습과‘예수의 고난의 가시관’으로 형상화된 화관의 두 가지 모습으로부터 추출하였다. 이 두 가지 모습은 서로 상반되는 이미지를 보여주고는 있지만 두 이미지 모두 ‘숭배의 상징’이라는 측면에서는 동일한 상징성을 가진다고 보았다. 다음으로 본고가 추출한 ‘화관’의 상징성은 ‘족쇄’로서의 상징이다. 이 상징성은 악인형 인물인 배일현의 서사를 중심으로 나타났으며, 배일현이 임동옥에게 선물했던 시계나 반지의 상징성을 통해 이를 추출하였다. 본고는 이 물건들을 의미를 ‘돈의 족쇄’라는 상징으로 보았으며, 이러한 족쇄의 의미를 통해 ‘생활의 발견과 수용’이라는 이태준의 변모를 추출할 수 있었다. 또한 이 점을 통해 본고는 <화관>이 불안정한 텍스트로 남은 이유를 찾을 수 있었다.

This study aims to analyze Hwagwan(the Coronet) by Lee Tae-jun on the basis of two symbolisms of the ancient coronets, and to explain the complex world of this work on the basis of the coronet's symbolism. The frame of authority is the theory of Frank Kermode, who claimed that there are two plots, the plot as foreground and the plot of secret as background. The symbolism of Hwagwan which is possible to be understood as the plot as foreground was derived from the two images, the coronet of bride and the crown of thorns of Jesus. These two images are contradictory each other, but have the same properties in that they all are the objects of admiration. The image of coronet as the plot as background is a symbol of restriction. This symbolism appears centering around the narration of Bae Il-hyeon, the character of villain type. So we drew this symbolism from the images of the watch or ring which Bae Il-hyeon presented to Im Dong-uk. We regarded their meaning as the images of restriction of money, and from the meaning of this restriction, we were possible to extract the transfiguration of Lee Tae-jun, that is, the accommodation and discovery of life. Moreover, we can find the reason why Hwagwan is left as incomplete text.
