고구려 기와의 분류와 특징에 관한 일고찰

Classification and qualifies of Gogurye's roof tiles

1900년경부터 지금까지 발굴조사나 수집행위에 의해 다양한 문양과 형태, 제작기법이 확인되는 고구려의 기와가 보고되었다. 하지만 이와 같이 보고된 자료들 중에는 고구려시대의 층위에서 발견된 것이나 고구려 유물과 같이 출토되었다고보고된것이 적다. 또한 수집행위에 의한 컬렉션은 출토상황이나 출토지를 명확하게 파악하기 어려운 유물이 많다. 그러므로 고구려의 기와로 보고된 자료들을 실제로 연구대상으로 삼기에 어려운 점이 있었다. 본 연구는 지금까지 보고된 발굴자료와 집성자료를 3가지의 판단조건을 제시해 고구려 기와로 명확히 판단 가능한 자료들을 선별했다. 그 결과 고구려의 기와는 7종류로, 고구려의 수막새는 34유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 발굴자료 뿐만이 아니라 컬렉션과 같은 집성자료도 고구려의 기와로 판단할 수 있어서 고구려 기와 연구의 대상의 폭을 넓힐 수 있었다. 또한 고구려 기와의 형태적, 문양적 특징을 확인할 수 있었고, 고구려 기와의 독창성에 대해서도 확인할 수 있었다. 지금까지 안학궁 유적에서 출토된 기와의 제작시기에 관해서는 고구려시대 후기 제작설, 고구려 시대 말기 제작설, 고려 시대 제작설이있다. 하지만 이와 같은 각설은 안학궁 유적에서 출토된 기와를 고구려 시대나 고려시대의 기와로 판명될 수 있는 자료와 비교, 검토해 내린 결론이 아니다. 본 연구는 안학궁 유적에서 다수 출토된 수막새를 명확히 고구려시대의 수막새로 판단가능한 자료를 선별해 문양 및 제작기법을 비교, 검토했다. 그 결과 안학궁 유적에서 출토된 대다수의 수막새는 고구려의 수막새와 문양 및 제작기법상의 특징이 다른 것을 확인했다. 이와 같은 수막새의 제작시기는 고구려 멸망 이후의 시기에 만들어졌을 가능성이 높다.

Some researches has reported various Gogurye's roof tiles design and their making techniques from excavation and private collections since about 1900. However, there were few reports telling that tiles were excavated on the same layers in Gogurye or with other Gogurye's remains. Also we couldn't know where and how they were excavated clearly from private collections. So it was hard to study those roof tiles. However this research selected clearly possible Gogurye's roof tiles among excavation and private collections with three qualifications. We could know whether excavation of materials as well as gathering materials were from Gogurye with these qualification. Also it means that we could extend Gogurye's roof tiles research and see the design feature and originality of Gogurye's roof tiles. I classified Gogurye's roof tiles into 7 kinds by their pattern and Gogurye's front cylinder roof tiles into 34 kinds by their design. The plain front roof tiles were not made in Kokuryo. But some roof tiles in Gogurye are unique in patterns, design and technique to make them. We can not find roof tiles like them in other dynasty or era. Also Gogurye's roof tiles showed the time and local gap in pattern and technique to make them. With this study, I hope there are more detailed studies about Gogurye's roof tiles. There have been assumptions about the period when the roof tiles from Anhakgung were made the latter period of the end of Gogurye. This research selected clearly possible Gogyrye's roof tiles and compared roof tiles from Anhakgung with them about design and making techniques. As a result, we could see that designs and making techniques of roof tiles from Anhakgung were different from Gogurye's roof tiles.
