This paper examines how Arabic and Korean misers are depicted in the satirical Bukhala' by al Jahiz, and in the Korean folktale Jaringobi. The comparison reveals both similarities and differences, and the paper discusses how each story fits into its social context and emphasizes the social virtues of its era, for instance how the Bukhala' characterizes the avarice of misers who lived during the Abbasid era as being against Ḥusnal Ḍiyāfah(the traditional virtue of the Arabs) and reveals political conflicts between Arab Muslims and non Arab Muslims. Jaringobi also promotes the social virtue of charity, with some Korean elementary schools having used Jaringobi anecdotes as a text in their curricula.
