키치(Kitsch)의 저항적(抵抗的)특성으로 바라본 태양의 서커스(Cirque du Soleil) 무대분장

This paper aimed to expand the scope of design expression in stage makeup byinvestigation how stage makeup expresses the resistance of kitsch in Cirque du Soleil.For methodology, the concept was identified through the literature review and 2 currentrepresentative kitsch artists were selected. Then resistant kitsch expressed in modern formative art was analyzed through their works. Finally, imitative, demoniac, political andviolent features were identified. Based on the analysis results, the personalities andmakeup of each character in Cirque du Soleil were analyzed. In accordance with theanalysis results, the imitative feature indicated the retro style trend borrowed from the tradition. The political feature emphasized the characteristics of a villain using the designof contrast and harmony, positive and negative effects and distortion. Nest, the demoniacfeature was described by the visual effect of grotesque and gaudy colors. For the violentfeature, stage makeup using a bald cap, tattoo and masks generated a menacing andaggressive expression. In conclusion, the resistant kitsch in stage makeup as formative art enabled the liberal and extensive thinking of design rather than positive conceptsubject to the existing frame and a variety of artistic restrictions. Further study needs to execute more in-depth research on stage makeup.
