신석기시대 제주도 토기의 남해안지역 유통 양상에 대한 연구

A Scientific Study of the Distribution of Jeju Pottery in the Southern Coastal Region during the Neolithic Period

본고에서는 남해안지역과는 구별되는 제주도 특유의 지질학적 환경을 감안하여, 제주도 신석기시대 토기의 남해안지역 유통 가능성을 타진하고자 자연과학적 분석을 실시하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 제주도에서는 제주 지방하천 수해복구 예정구역 발굴조사 유적과 서귀포 체육시설 부지 유적 토기자료를 선별하였고, 남해안지역의 완도 여서도패총, 여수 안도패총, 사천 늑도유적에서 각각 출토된 제주도산으로 추정되는 신석기시대 토기편을 수습하여 분석하였다. 이들 토기의 원산지분석을 위해 먼저 토기암석학분석(Ceramic petrography)을 통해 토기 내 현무암 첨가제의 존재여부를 확인하였고, 다음으로 중성자방사화분석(Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis)을 통해 신석기시대 제주도와 남해안지역 사이의 토기 유통양상을 규명하고자 하였다. 이번 분석결과, 여서도, 안도, 늑도유적 모두에서 현무암편 첨가제가 혼입된 토기가 확인되었으나 이들은 제주도에서 제작되어 유입된 것은 아닌 것으로 해석되었다. 즉, 제주도 출토 토기의 남해안지역 유통 가능성은 그다지 높지 않은 것으로 나타났으며, 여서도, 안도, 늑도유적에서 각각 확인된 현무암편 혼입 토기들은 제주도가 아닌 남해안의 서로 다른 지역들에서 생산되어 유통되었을 가능성이 높은 것으로 추정되었다.

This paper considers the possibility that the pottery of Jeju Island, which is distinctive in its geological composition, was distributed throughout the southern coastal region of the Korean Peninsula in the Neolithic period. In undertaking this study from a scientific approach, samples from Jeju Island were compared with 'Jeju'pottery excavated at the mainland sites of Yeoseo-do Shell Midden in Wando, Ando Shell Midden in Yeosu, and Neukdo in Sacheon. In order to examine the distribution of these ceramic samples, ceramic petrography was carried out in order to identify the presence or absence of tempering material derived from volcanic rock, and NAA was used to further investigate the provenance of the ceramic samples. Interestingly enough, it was revealed that it the mainland samples had not come from Jeju Island but had been produced and distributed from an as of yet unidentified place. Therefore, the possibility that Jeju pottery may have been distributed in the mainland was found to be highly unlikely.
