장률 영화에 나타난 육화된 '경계'로서의 여성 주체

Female Subjects in Zhang Lu's Films as Incarnated 'Boundaries'

소설가이며 영화감독이고 중국인이자 조선인의 정체성을 가진 장률 감독은 살아있는 문화적 '경계'와도 같은 인물이다. 그의 영화에서 중국, 조선 그리고 여성은 빠지지 않는 키워드이다. 특히 여성의 육체는 장률 감독이 디아스포라 지식인으로서 가지고 있는 근원적 불안감과 복합적 욕망이 충돌하는 공간이다. 그의 영화에서 여성의 육체는 한 사회 내에서 권력이 작동하는 방식이 가장 첨예하게 가시화되는 대상이며, 이는 '섹스'를 통해 더욱 극명하게 드러난다. '섹스'는 한 여성이 개인으로서 한 남성과 관계 맺는 방식과 국적과 계층적, 젠더적 특성들이 사회 안에서 어떻게 구조화되는지 보여주기 때문이다. <경계>, <이리>, <중경>은 하위주체로서의 특성을 갖는 여성 주체와 생물학적으로는 남성지만 사회적으로 남성성을 상실한 여성적 주체들이 어떻게 그들의 육신 위에 차별적 기표와 공간의 상처들을 각인하는지를 보여준다. 반면 이 작품들에서 남성적 주체들은 원초적 남성성이 구현될 수 있는 시공간을 복원하기 위해 노력하지만 그 시도는 예고된 좌절로 귀결되고 만다. 이 세 편의 작품에서 재현의 차원에서 가장 문제적인 인물은 <이리>의 진서인데, 그녀는 스스로의 이름을 반복적으로 호명하는 행위를 통해 자신뿐 아니라 다른 여성인물까지 상징적 기표에서 살아있는 주체로 전환시킨다.

Zhang Lu, a film director and writer, Korean Chinese, himself is a living 'cultural boundary'. China, Korea and Woman are the main key words which are always found on his films. Especially the female body is the place for clashing his fundamental insecurity with complex desires he has as a diaspora intellectual. In his film, the female body is the object through which the working of the power in the society is most sharply visualized. Visualization is keenest when that body engages in sex. 'Sex' displays how a female subject as an individual relates to a male subject and at the same time how nationality, class and gender are structured within a society. In <Desert Dream>, <Iri> and <Chongqing>, female subjects with subaltern characteristics and male subjects who have lost social masculinity carve discriminative signs and wounds of a certain place onto their bodies. On the other hand, male subjects who still have social masculinity try to retrieve a space in which primitive masculinity can be restored but finally arrives on the predictable failure. At the representative level, the most problematic character in these three films is Jinsuh in <Iri>. By her repeatedly calling her name, she turns female characters including herself from symbolic signs into living subjects who have blood and flesh.
