중국 포산(佛山; 불산)의 와지공자이(瓦脊公仔; 와척공자) 연구

A Study of Foshan Waji Ceramic Figure in China

본 연구는 중국 남방지역에 위치한 포산의 도자조각에 대한 이론제공을 목적으로 한 것이다. 포산 도자 대부분은 스완요(石灣窯; 석만요)에서 제작되었기 때문에 스완에서 제작한 도자조각을 스완공자이(公仔; 공자)라 한다. 스완공자이는 건축 장식에 사용되어 와지공자이로 불리기도 했는데, 그 발전을 이해하기 위해서 스완공자이의 역사적 맥락을 서술하였다. 와지공자이는 스완공자이의 독특한 도자 특징을 그대로 사용하여 다양한 형태로 인물조각을 조합하고 다채로운 유약을 사용하여 제작되었고, 번조 후에 건축물의 기와에 가장 윗부분에 장식했다. 명대와 청대에 가장 많이 제작된 와지공자이는 광저우에 위치한 천지아스(陈家祠; 진가사)와 포산에 위치한 주미야오(祖廟; 조묘)가 대표적이며, 이 두 장소의 와지공자이를 통해 당시의 높은 도자 수준을 가늠할 수 있다. 와지공자이의 제작은 기법의 독특함뿐만 아니라 높은 효율의 생산체계를 가지고 있었는데, 그것은 현재 포산의 건축도자의 생산 공정을 완성하는데 기초가 되었고, 현재 광둥성 일대의 대학 도자교육과 도예가 들의 제작기법과 재료 배합 등에 큰 영향을 주었다. 현재 중국 광동성의 도예가 들과 민간 도예가 들은 다양한 방법으로 와지공자이를 응용해 작품을 제작하고 있으며, 현재에도 중요한 영역으로 자리를 잡고 있다. 와지공자이 연구를 통해 현재 포산의 도자산업이 성공할 수 있었던 배경을 이해하고 나아가 중국 광동성 도예의 발전 방향을 이해하는 밑거름이 되기를 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to provide theory about ceramic sculpture in Foshan located in southern China. Most of the Foshan ceramics are produced in the Shiwan kiln, and the ceramic sculpture made in Shiwan is called as Shiwan Ceramic Figure. The biggest feature of Shiwan Ceramic Doll is that it was made by the people's demand unlike 'Ceramic Figures' representing ceramic sculpture of figures in China. And Shiwan Ceramic Doll was also called as Waji Ceramic Figure because it was used to decorate structures. To understand its development, it is needed to understand the historical context of Shiwan Ceramic Doll beforehand. Waji Ceramic Figure was made by using the unique ceramic characteristics of Shiwan Ceramic Doll, and after it was made, it was used to decorate the top of the roof tile of a building. The places famous for Waji Ceramic Figure are the Chan Clan Ancestral Hall located in Guangzhou and the Ancestral Temple located in Foshan, and with the Waji Ceramic Figure in the two places, we can assume the highest level of ceramics of the time. Regarding the process of making Waji Ceramic Figure, they secured not only technique but also a high-efficient production system. And this formed the ground in completing the current production process of architectural ceramics in Foshan. Presently, professional and amateur ceramists in Guangdong, China are making works by applying Waji Ceramic Figure, and it is regarded as an important area in university education, too. This study is expected to help understand the background about the success of ceramic industry in Foshan, China and furthermore lay the foundation to understand the direction of ceramic development in Guangdong, China.
