사회론의 홍수 속에서 한나 아렌트의 '사회적인 것' 읽기

Reading 'The Social' in a flood of discourse about society : around The Human Condition

최근 사회에 대한 이야기가 부쩍 늘어가고 있다. 우리 사회를 진단하고 처방하려는 사회와 사회적인 것(the social)에 대한 활발한 논의 속에서 한나 아렌트의 사회적인 것에 대한 비판을 검토해 보는 일은 의미 있는 시도다. 그녀는 사회 내지 사회적인 것을 자신의 사상 전반에서 일관되게 비판적으로 다루고 있으며, 사회적인 것의 문제를 사회적인 것 자체의 복원이 아니라 정치적인 것을 통해 극복해야한다고 했기 때문이다. 그녀에 따르면 사적 영역과 공적 영역의 흐릿해진 경계 속에서 탄생한 제3의 것이 사회적인 것이다. 이 글은 사회론의 홍수 속에서 한나 아렌트의 사회적인 것 읽기를 위한 초석 놓기 정도라고 해야 할 것이다. 이 글의 목적은『인간의 조건』 2장을 중심으로 제3의 것을 비판하며 아렌트가 주고자 했던 메시지를 규명해 보려고 하며, 이것이 범람하는 사회론에 주는 시사점을 밝히고자 한다.

Arendt told that The Social is the third from a blurred boundary between the private and the common. It is hybrid of the private and the public. Also she mentions that "society" is a hybrid realm where private interests have public significance. In this context, we say that The social is the expansion of private interests and sometimes we use The Economic instead of The Social. But I do not think that these usages show appropriately the implication of The Social. This paper examines messages from Arendt criticism on The Social. And it proposes meaningful suggestions to people in a flood of discourse about society by it. This paper does not deal with all about discussions and arguments about Arendt's The Social. In this paper, The Social is examined around 'the third' of chapter 2, The Human Condition.
