The purpose of this paper is to consider Islamic education and Kuttab system like Seodang of Korea in old times. What I wish to show here is that Kuttāb system as a primary education in Islam world with the advent of Islam has played an important role in educating Islamic human type that is called Homo Islamicus. With Islamic doctrine focusing on acquiring knowledge, the education worked together as one and became the most important tool in instilling Islamic faith for the children(their age 4~10). Also Kuttāb did help to settle Islam in its conquered districts. Curriculum of Kuttāb in pre-Islamic period concentrated on reading and writing, but since the advent of Islam, the core of it became Quranic recitation focused on Islamic subjects. Cramming education prevented a creative education from the children even though Kuttāb served an energetic social function as the primary institution. Kuttāb was established as Waqf(endowment) by the individual like the Sultan, merchant, administrator and so on. The social evaluation on the teachers of Kuttāb was low relatively, they worked two jobs. We arrive at the conclusion that Kuttāb carried out the proper function for the honor students to continue their studies in the high institution, Madrasa and to instill Islamic identity for the young children as sound Muslims in this world and hereafter.
