This paper aims to study if Islam prohibited music, songs, musical instruments, and dance. I attempted to find out the grounds of the prohibition from the Qur‘ān, the Sunnah, and the rulings of the four Sunni schools of law, as well as the Fatwās from some modern Muslim states like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and etc. Although Qur‘ānic verses do not prohibit music and songs directly, the Sunnah and the rulings of the four Sunni schools of law do not allow them on the basis of some Qur‘ānic verses (17:64, 31:6, and 53:59-62). The Sunnah permits, however, music and songs on the occasions of feasts, weddings, and Muhammad’s coming back from battles, which is also followed by the rulings of the four Sunni Islamic schools of law and modern Muslim jurists.
