‘대학국제화’ 담론과 현실에 대한 대학교수들의 인식과 경험:인문사회계 교수들의 내러티브를 중심으로

Cognition and experience of professors on discourse and reality of the internationalization of higher education: Focusing on narratives of professors in human and social studies

이 연구는 세계화의 진전으로 인한 고등교육체제 변화에 대한 대응전략으로서 한국사회에서 진행되어 온 ‘대학국제화’ 담론과 현실을 행위자들의 경험과 해석에 의해 그 의의와 한계를 분석하고자 하는목적을 지니고 있다. 이를 위해 최근 가파르게 진행되어 온 대학국제화의 가장 적극적인 추진 주체인 동시에 대상인 교수들은 대학국제화 담론을 어떻게 의미화하고 경험하는지를 탐구하여 그 결과를 논의하였다. 질적 연구방법에 의해 서울과 지방에 재직하고 있는 인문사회계 교수 8명을 심층 면접하였고, 그 결과를 1) 대학국제화의 개념과 의미 2) 대학국제화 담론과 정책에 대한 평가 3) 대학국제화 방향성4) 개인적인 대응방식 4가지 범주로 분류하여 분석하였다. 연구결과에 의하면, 대학교수들은 대학국제화의 필요성에는 공감하면서도 한국사회에서 이루어져온 대학국제화 담론과 현실의 방향성에는 다소 비판적인 입장을 취하고 있었다. 특히, 현재 진행되고 있는 대학국제화 담론과 현실은 구체적 내용과 지향이 없이 양적 지표에 의해서만 평가가 이루어지고 있고, 미국화에 편중되어 있기 때문에 대학교육의 본질을 흐리고 있음을 지적하면서 한국적 혹은 지역적 특성에 맞는 대학국제화 모델을 창출해야 한 다는 입장을 보여주고 있었다. 한편, 대학국제화에 대한 개인적인 관점이나 입장과는 별개로 대학국제 화에 대한 개념 정의와 개인적인 대응방식은 매우 다양하게 드러나고 있었다. 이러한 분석결과를 토대 로 한국사회 대학국제화 담론과 정책을 비판적으로 논의하고 이에 따른 정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the discourse and reality of internationalization of higher education by the experience of actors, university professors in human and social studies.That aims to discuss the signification and limitation of internationalization of higher education focusing on how university professors make sense of their own experience in a global context where the internationalization of education overwhelms as a dominant discourse and policy.After analyzing the participants’ narratives, their interpretation and strategy were classified into four categories: 1) concept of internationalization of higher education 2) evaluation of internationalization of higher education 3) orientation of internationalization of higher education 4) individual strategy. Based on the result, I discussed the meaning and limitation of internationalization in the Koreanuniversity context.
