General CanadianEnglish has gone relatively unnoticed until recently when compared to British English and American English which have led the way to English as a globallanguage. At the same time, there has been a growing recognition in varietiesof English. Among them, General Canadian English has a role in maintaining and further expanding the status of English as a lingua franca of the 21st century.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to describe and discuss the status of General Canadian English in association with various external factors as well as linguisticfeatures. With this in mind, this paper traces the extralinguistic factors and status of General Canadian English particularly in relation to the economic, social,cultural, and educational development of Canada. Next, cultural and educationalexchanges between Korea and Canada are introduced. The paper then concludes with linguistic predictions specifically pertaining to the future of General Canadian English.
