Definition and Characteristics of Cyberspace -Focused on Some Examples-

본 연구의 목적은 국내에서 흔히 가상공간과 혼동하여 사용하고 있는 사이버공간이라는 용어에 대해 정의하고, 그 성격이 어떠한지에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 사이버공간은 가상공간의 하위개념으로, 컴퓨터ㆍ전자기술로 인해 만들어졌으며 사람들 사이에 커뮤니케이션이 일어남에 따라 각종 문화현상이 일어나는 공간을 말한다. 사이버공간은 대체로 다음과 같은 특징을 갖는다. 1) 현실세계에 존재하지 않지만 분명히 실재하고 있으며, 그것은 가짜나 현실의 모사가 아닌 또 다른 실재이다. 2) 접근성과 이동성이 뛰어나지만 저소득자나 교육받지 못한 사람들을 배제한다. 3) 의미로 가득 찬 텍스트로 이루어져 있으면서 비선형적이고 입체적인 하이퍼텍스트적 성격을 가지고있다. 4) 감시와 통제가 용이하며, 그 방식 또한 고도화된 공간이다. 본문에서 제시된, 사이버공간에서 일어난 몇가지 사건들은 이러한 사이버공간의 특징을 잘 보여주는 문화현상의 예가 될 수 있다.

This article focuses on definition and characteristics of cyberspace. Cyberspace, a concept that belongs to virtual space, is made with the help of computer and electronic technologies, and lots of communication and cultural phenomena are occurring inside the space. Cyberspace has following features: 1) It is physically non-existence in real world, but it does not mean 'no exist in everywhere.' It is another reality, not mirroring or copying of the real world. 2) It has accessibility and mobility, but it excludes poor and uneducated people. 3) It is composed of texts that are full of meaning and has non-linear, dimensional hypertext features. 4) It is easy to watch and control. Some incidents, occurred in cyberspace, is a good example to show the characteristics of cyberspace.
