This paper concerns with some aspects of multilingualism as found in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. These countries have a common linguistic situation in the sense that several languages are in use, namely Classical Arabic, Modern Arabic, Dialectal Arabic, Berber, French, Spanish, and English. In this regard the differences between the three countries are generally differences of degree, rather than of kind. The phenomenon of multilingualism affects the sociocultural life of these countries and gives rise to sociolinguistic factors that must be taken into account in educational and language planning. The outline of the sociolinguistic situation in the Maghreb presented in this article has the three goals of (ⅰ) studying the social functions of languages, and (ⅱ) providing knowledge of the linguistic situation of he three countries and (ⅲ) undertaking a more profound investigation of the sociocultural features of multilingualism.
