Analysis of the Lion's Symbolism in 「Kalila Wa Dimna」

「KAlial wa Dimna」is the fables which are balances excellently between the surface level meaning and the deeper meaning. The surface level meaning is the entertainment and the moral instruction while the deeper meaning is the political satire being reflected by the translator. The animal characters in this work have variable symbolism according to their roles in the stories. But the lion has the fixed symbolism in the all stories. The lion acts the great beings which are powerful but foolish. The article has investigated the political situation of the time which this work was translated and the translator's social status in order to analize to lion's symbolism. Ibn al-Muquffa' was the Persian mawālī being treated inequitably in the Arab society. So he was angry with the Arab governor and despised the pure blooded Arab people. The lion's symbolism has been analized by the surface level side and the deeper side. In the surface level side, the lion symbolizes the great sized powerful man and the governors. Otherwise in the deeper side, the lion symbolizes the Khaliīfa al-Manṣūr and pure blooded Arab people which was the ruling class.
